Umami Fried Chicken Experience | Bad Bird

Identified as the fifth taste, umami brings a more flavorful palate to every dish. The taste of umami is said to be distinct, rich, and savory. And this is why Bad Bird introduces their Umami Fried Chicken which is inspired by Japan’s extensive use of this powder to their cooking. In 2014, Bad Bird opened their first store in Hole in the Wall in Century City, Makati.

On my recent dining experience, I discovered that Bad Bird has a branch near my place which is in SM Fairview. That was not actually my first time to taste their dishes because I already tried to dine in Hole in the Wall during one of our foodie events. I just kinda missed the taste, so my friend and I decided to spend our dinner here.

Upon entering, the vibe of the restaurant is very modern yet classy. I liked how they incorporate the neutral colors into their walls with the minimal theme. It’s so interesting to see a spacious area which has a basic interesting interior design.

We used our Zomato Gold to purchase the 1+1 food but unfortunately, they changed the mechanics to just drinks. Okay, so we ended up buying some of the recommended dishes:

BB Fresh Corn + Coleslaw + 1pc. Chicken (P360)
If you want to skip the rice, you may opt to order this dish. To make it easier to munch, you can ask the staff to shred off the corn from the cob and serve it to you in a dish. I found the Umami Fried Chicken a perfect match to the shredded corn. The chicken’s skin was the bomb and flavorful to every bite while the meat tasted too bland for me.

Sweet Potato Waffles with Miso Butter + 1pc. Chicken (P360)
This version of waffle was so thick and firm to every bite. The sweetness was still there, but not too much unlike the one with flour recipe. The Umami Fried Chicken was also good to pair with this as they balance off the taste of each other - sweet and salty.

Homebrew Iced Tea (P120) and Mango Rice Milk (P170)
We used Zomato Gold for these signature drinks. I liked the Mango Rice Milk than the Homemade Iced Tea. It was refreshingly good and sweet to taste.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience here. If you want to have a different fried chicken experience, Bad Bird is a good choice. I liked the texture of the Umami flavors. Every bite was good and surprising. If you want a little bit of a kick to your taste buds, you may order one with mild to extreme spice. I also heard that their dirty rice is also good, too.
